4 rivers was founded in 2009 by pitmaster John Rivers, a man whose love for Southern cooking ran deeper than the smoke from his wood-fired pits. What began as a charitable catering operation to raise funds for local causes grew rapidly into a full-fledged restaurant in Sandy Springs, Georgia, rooted in authentic 4 rivers bbq techniques passed down through generations.

2009

The First Smoke

John Rivers fires up his first commercial pit in Sandy Springs, GA, serving slow-smoked brisket and pulled pork at local charity events. The community response is overwhelming — demand far exceeds supply from the very first weekend.

2010

Doors Open

4 rivers opens its first brick-and-mortar smokehouse on Powers Ferry Road. Within six months, it's named one of Atlanta's must-visit BBQ spots by regional food publications and quickly earns a devoted local following.

2013

Award-Winning Recognition

The 4rivers smokehouse brand earns its first major national award at the American Royal BBQ Championship. Our brisket and signature sauces capture the attention of food critics across the United States, cementing our reputation.

2016

Expansion Begins

Fueled by passionate demand, 4 rivers expands to three additional locations across Georgia and Florida. Each new smokehouse maintains the same hand-crafted standards, pitmaster philosophy, and community-first values as the original.

Founder & Pitmaster

The visionary behind 4 rivers, John's philosophy is simple: slow smoke, quality ingredients, and a genuine love for feeding people. With over 20 years of BBQ mastery, he still personally oversees every menu development.

Maria Santos

Executive Chef

A Culinary Institute of America graduate, Maria joined 4 rivers in 2012 and transformed our sides menu into an award-winning lineup of Southern comfort classics. She leads recipe innovation while maintaining authentic roots.

Derek Thompson

Head Pitmaster

Derek has spent 12 years mastering the art of wood-fire smoking at 4 rivers. His expertise with oak and pecan woods produces the signature smoke ring that our guests travel miles to experience. A true craftsman of the pit.
